Variation Groups and Their Variations

Variation Groups contain collections of Variations. They allow you to keep your Variations organized and contained within groups that you create according to themes or promotions. For example, you could create three different Variation Groups as follows that each represents a different Campaign theme.

Variation Group 1 – Red Theme

Variation 1 – Change the Home Page banner to red.

Trigger – Home page, /index.html, for example.

Variation 2 – Change the Checkout button to red.

Trigger – Checkout page, /checkout.html, for example.

Variation Group 2 – Green Theme

Variation 1 – Change the Home Page banner to green.

Trigger – Home page, /index.html, for example.

Variation 2 – Change the Add to Cart button to green.

Trigger – Checkout page, /checkout.html, for example.

Variation Group 3 – Blue Theme

Variation 1 – Change the Home Page banner to blue.

Trigger – Home page, /index.html, for example.

Variation 2 – Change the Add to Cart button to blue.

Trigger – Checkout page, /checkout.html, for example.

The Relationship Between Variations in Different Variation Groups

If you take a look at the three Variation Groups listed above, you will notice some consistencies. SiteSpect's Variation Groups maintain the following relationships:

  • All Variation Groups always have the same number of Variations. This is consistent across Variation Groups.
  • Variations have an ordinal relationship to Variations in other Variation Groups. This means that:
    • The first Variation within a given Variation Group is related to the first Variation in all of the other Variation Groups within this Campaign
    • The second Variation within a given Variation Group is related to all second Variation in all of the other Variation Groups within this Campaign.
    • The nth Variation within a given Variation Group is related to all nth Variations in all of the other Variation Groups within this Campaign.
  • Variations that match in order share Triggers. If you change the Triggers for the first Variation in Variation Group 3 above, you are also changing the Triggers for all first Variations in all the other Variation Groups within this Campaign.
  • If you delete a Variation from one Variation Group, the Variations that match in order in all Variation Groups within the same Campaign are also deleted.

After reading the section above that describes the relationship between Variations across Variation Groups within the same Campaign, you may be wondering What if I don't need all the Variations in each Variation Group and in fact want to delete some? We have that covered; you can turn them off.

Turning Off a Variation

If you don't want to make use of all the Variations in a Variation Group, you can turn off the ones you don't need. Here's how it works:

  1. Open the Variations area in the A/B Campaign Builder.
  2. Open one of the Variation Groups and review the existing Variations. Locate the Variation that you don't need.
  3. Click the three dot menu at the right end of the row for an existing Variation.
  4. Select Turn Off. SiteSpect disables the Variation; it appears dimmed.

SiteSpect does not show turned off Variation to visitors.

To turn on a disabled Variation, click the three dot menu and select Turn On.
