We recommend using the automated Frequency Calculator to calculate assignments, however, if you prefer, you can use the formula presented here to calculate it manually.
The formula presented in this topic helps you to down-weight assignments to a single Campaign. It provides the Frequency required to assign a specific Percentage of Overall Traffic to a single Campaign and assumes that all other active Campaigns receive an equal proportion of the remaining traffic. The formula looks like this:
((P / (100 / C)) * 100 = New Frequency
In the formula above:
- P is the Percentage of Overall Traffic that you want to assign to a single Campaign.
- C is the total number of Active Campaigns.
Two Campaigns
The following example adjusts the assignments of two Campaigns.
Default Distribution of Frequency
The following table shows how SiteSpect distributes assignments to two Campaigns if you leave the Frequency field set to the default, 100%.
Active Campaigns | Percentage of Overall Traffic (P) | Frequency |
Campaign 1 | 50% | 100 |
Campaign 2 | 50% | 100 |
Total | 100% |
Example Showing How to Calculate Frequency to Down-Weight a Campaign
This example down-weights Campaign 2 from 50% to 20% so that SiteSpect assigns more users to Campaign 1, a change from 50% to 80%. The change in percentages is displayed in the Percentage of Overall Traffic column in the table below. The new Frequency for Campaign 2 is displayed in the highlighted cell of the table.
Active Campaigns | Percentage of Overall Traffic (P) | Frequency |
Campaign 1 | 80% | 100 |
Campaign 2 | 20% | ((20 / (100 / 2)) * 100 = 40 |
Total | 100% |
Using the formula presented earlier, figure the Frequency as follows:
- P is the Percentage of Overall Traffic that you want to assign to a single Campaign. From the table above, P = 20.
- C is the total number of Active Campaigns. From the table above, C = 2.
The formula ends up looking like this: ((20 / (100 / 2)) * 100 = 40.
The new Frequency for Campaign 2 is 40.
This means that to assign 20% of users to Campaign 2, change the Frequency on the Time & Duration tab to 40. SiteSpect assigns the remaining 80% of available traffic to Campaign 1.
Three Campaigns
The following example adjusts the assignments of three Campaigns.
Default Distribution of Frequency
The following table shows how SiteSpect distributes assignments to three Campaigns if you leave the Frequency field set to the default, 100%.
Active Campaigns | Percentage of Overall Traffic (P) | Frequency |
Campaign 1 | 33.3% | 100 |
Campaign 2 | 33.3% | 100 |
Campaign 3 | 33.3% | 100 |
Total | 100% | 100% |
Example Showing How to Calculate Frequency to Down-Weight One of Three Campaigns
The goal is to down-weight Campaign 3 from 33.3% to 10% so that SiteSpect assigns more users to Campaigns 1 and 2, a change from 33.3% to 45% for each. The change in percentage is displayed in the Percentage of Overall Traffic column in the table below. The new Frequency for Campaign 3 is displayed in the highlighted cell of the table.
Active Campaigns | Percentage of Overall Traffic (P) | Frequency |
Campaign 1 | 45% | 100 |
Campaign 2 | 45% | 100 |
Campaign 3 | 10% | ((10 / (100 / 3)) * 100 = 30 |
Total | 100% | 100% |
Using the formula presented earlier, figure the Frequency as follows:
- P is the Percentage of Overall Traffic that you want to assign to a single Campaign. From the table above, P = 10.
- C is the total number of Active Campaigns. From the table above, C = 3.
The formula ends up looking like this: ((10 / (100 / 3)) * 100 = 30.
The new Frequency for Campaign 3 is 30.
This means that to assign 10% of users to Campaign 3, change the Frequency on the Time & Duration tab to 30. SiteSpect evenly distributes the remaining 90% of available traffic to Campaigns 1 and 2.
