Adjusting Traffic for Multiple Campaigns

When you run multiple Campaigns, you can specify how SiteSpect should distribute assignments across them using the Assignment Frequency field. You can do this yourself using the formulas described on this page but we recommend using the Assignment Frequency Calculator.

The formula presented in this topic helps you adjust user traffic routed to multiple Campaigns. It explains how to arrive at the Assignment Frequency required to assign a specific Percentage of Overall Traffic to each active Campaign:

  1. Sort Campaigns, from lowest to highest, in the order of the Percentage of Overall Traffic you want to assign to each Campaign.
  2. Starting with the first Campaign in the resulting list (lowest Percentage of Overall Traffic), calculate the Assignment Frequency using the following formula:

Assignment Frequency of the Campaign with the next lower Percentage of Overall Traffic +((Percentage of Overall Traffic for this Campaign - Percentage of Overall Traffic for the next lower Campaign) * Number of Campaigns with a Percentage of Overall Traffic greater than or equal to this Campaign) = Assignment Frequency

  1. Calculate the Assignment Frequency for the remaining Campaigns in order, starting with the next lowest Percentage of Overall Traffic.
Note: The Assignment Frequency for the Campaign with the highest Percentage of Overall Traffic should always be 100.

Four Campaigns

The following shows how SiteSpect assigns users to four Campaigns:

  • first, if you leave Assignment Frequency set to the default
  • and then, if you adjust the distribution yourself
Note: As shown in the Assignment Frequency column in the following table, the Assignment Frequency for a Campaign is set to 100 by default, which means that assignments are distributed evenly across all Campaigns. In addition, keep in mind that the total of the amounts in the Percentage of Overall Traffic column must equal 100%.

Default Distribution of Assignments

The following table shows how SiteSpect distributes assignments to four Campaigns if you leave the Assignment Frequency field set to the default, 100%.

Active Campaigns Percentage of Overall Traffic Default Assignment Frequency
Campaign 1 25% 100
Campaign 2 25% 100
Campaign 3 25% 100
Campaign 4 25% 100
Total 100%

Example Showing How to Calculate Assignment Frequency According to Your Own Percentages

This example adjusts the assignments to each Campaign so that they have the following percentages of overall traffic:

Campaign 1: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 30%

Campaign 2: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 20%

Campaign 3: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 40%

Campaign 4: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 10%

The following table lists the four Campaigns sorted from the lowest to highest Percentage of Overall Traffic to be assigned to each Campaign. Observe the second column starts at 10% and climbs to 40%. The third column shows how the formula, explained above, calculates what to enter in the Assignment Frequency field.

Active Campaigns Percentage of Overall Traffic Calculated Assignment Frequency
Campaign 4 10% 0 + ((10-0) * 4) = 40
Campaign 2 20% 40 + ((20-10) * 3) = 70
Campaign 1 30% 70 + ((30-20) * 2) = 90
Campaign 3 40% 90 + ((40-30) * 1) = 100
Total 100%

Five Campaigns

The following shows how SiteSpect assigns users to five Campaigns:

  • first, if you leave Assignment Frequency set to the default
  • and then, if you adjust the distribution yourself.

Default Distribution of Assignments

Active Campaigns Percentage of Overall Traffic Default Assignment Frequency
Campaign 1 20% 100
Campaign 2 20% 100
Campaign 3 20% 100
Campaign 4 20% 100
Campaign 5 20% 100
Total 100%

Example Showing How to Calculate Assignment Frequency According to Your Own Percentages

This example adjusts the assignments to each Campaign so that they have the following percentages of overall traffic:

Campaign 1: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 20%

Campaign 2: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 15%

Campaign 3: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 20%

Campaign 4: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 5%

Campaign 5: Percentage of Overall Traffic = 40%

The following table lists the five Campaigns sorted from the lowest to highest Percentage of Overall Traffic to be assigned to each Campaign. Observe the second column starts at 5% and climbs to 40% and that two of the Campaigns have the same Percentage of Overall Traffic. The third column shows how the formula, explained above, calculates what to enter in the Assignment Frequency field.

Active Campaigns Percentage of Overall Traffic Calculated Assignment Frequency
Campaign 4 5% 0 + ((5-0) * 5) = 25
Campaign 2 15% 25 + ((15-5) * 4) = 65
Campaign 1 20% 65 + ((20-15) * 3) = 80
Campaign 3 20% 80 + ((20-20) * 2) = 80
Campaign 5 40% 80 + ((40-20) * 1) = 100
Total 100%
